Sitting up straight is something we’ve been told to do since we were little.  Just like eating right and exercise, sitting up straight takes effort. First, let’s list the benefits of a good posture:

  • Improves circulation.  Breathing is also better which lowers stress levels.
  • Posture directly affects pain in the back and neck.  
  • Promotes better balance. 
  • Prevents the spine from being fixed in an unnatural position.
  • It helps decrease abnormal wear of joint surfaces.
  • Creates a positive first impression of how people perceive you, and sitting up straight suggests self-confidence and togetherness. 

Here are some tips on how to develop a good posture:

  • Stay mindful of your intent to stand tall and sit correctly by making a note-to-self and placing it where you will see it.  There are also apps/chrome extensions that remind you to check your posture. Switch up where you have your note if you get used to seeing it.
  • Do stretches and take regular breaks from standing or sitting in one place.  Once you move around you will feel better. Sitting still encourages you to slouch.
  • Make sure that your screen is the correct height and you have a good chair for your body type.  If you stand, consider the shoes you are wearing and getting a padded mat. 
  • Make sure you are drinking plenty of water and getting exercise.  But if you still cannot figure out why you are slouching, give us a call at Fonke Chiropractic to see if there is an underlying issue.
