Spinal Stenosis

The Scenario

man with back painThis is a person who has dealt with chronic back pain for many years and it continues to worsen.  The pain gets worse when they walk, and is relieved by bending forward, which is why most people with significant spinal stenosis bend over a shopping cart in order to make it through the grocery store.  There is likely arm or leg pain that goes with it.


Spinal Stenosis is becoming epidemic in the elderly population these days and it is up to physicians to come up with effective solutions. It is estimated that 2.4 million Americans with have Spinal Stenosis by 2020.  Spinal stenosis is when the spinal canal (where the spin cord is located) becomes narrower.  This can be due to spinal degeneration, disc bulges/herniation, spondylolisthesis, and synovial cysts.

Common Symptoms

  • Back pain
  • stiffness
  • tight muscles
  • sciatica
  • slower movement
  • pain with walking
  • pain with standing
  • leg pain
  • leg swelling
  • leg numbness
  • bending forward relieves pain

Treatment Options

Conservative Chiropractic Treatment

Cox Flexion Distraction protocol 2, Ice/Heat, electrical muscle stimulation, core strengthening exercises, stretching, and anti-inflammatory diet/supplementation.

Medical Treatment

Medications (Anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxers), cortisone injections, or surgery.  Common Surgical interventions are Laminectomy and or Spinal Fusion with pedicle screws and rods.
